When to leave Brighton

For short-haul flights, leave Brighton about 4 hours before departure. For long-haul, allow 5 hours. For 4 to 7am flights, leave by 2:30am for a comfortable buffer, when the A23 and M25 run almost empty.

Taxi from Heathrow Airport to Brighton

A return taxi from Heathrow to Brighton collects from Terminal Parking next to your arrival’s terminal, not the forecourt. The driver tracks your inbound flight and holds your fixed fare whatever time you land.

How the airport pickup works

You land, clear immigration and collect your bags. Walk to Terminal Parking, a short sign posted walk at every terminal. Connect to the free Heathrow Wi-Fi, then call or message your driver on the number in your booking. They tell you the exact level and bay. Your 45 minutes of free waiting time starts when your flight touches down.

Festivals and term starts

Two Brighton patterns fill the diary fast. University of Sussex and University of Brighton students arrive for term in late September and early October, often with two or three large cases, so an 8-seater suits a shared run. Brighton Pride in early August and Brighton Festival in May bring international visitors straight from Heathrow to a city hotel.

Brighton to Heathrow Airport Taxi Fare

The Brighton train problem

Brighton has fast trains to London, but none direct to Heathrow. The quickest rail route runs Brighton to Victoria, across to Paddington, then the Heathrow Express, at around 1 hour 50 and £40 to £90 per person, with three luggage changes. The Thameslink and Elizabeth line route via Farringdon is calmer at about 2 hours 5. The National Express coach from Poole Valley is the only direct option, but runs just a few times a day, so it rarely fits a 5am check-in.

Journey Time and Route

Distance by Brighton and Hove area

Patcham and Withdean (BN1 north) sit closest to the A23 at about 63 miles. The city centre is around 65, and Hove or Kemptown nearer 67. The same fixed fare applies across BN1, BN2 and BN3.

The motorway route

The standard route runs A23 north through Patcham, Pyecombe and Burgess Hill, onto the M23 at Junction 11, past Gatwick, then the M25 at Junction 7 and anticlockwise to Junction 14 for Terminals 2, 3 and 4, or Junction 15 for Terminal 5. No tolls. No Congestion Charge. No ULEZ.

Traffic notes

Two slow spots: the M25 between Junctions 7 and 14, the Gatwick to Heathrow stretch, busy at weekday rush hour, and the M23 near Gatwick on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. A 4am or late run often drops the trip to about 1 hour 20 minutes.

Why Book in Advance

Pre-booking locks in your fare before M25 traffic or last-minute demand can lift it. A local Brighton cab booked an hour ahead runs on the meter, often far dearer by Terminal 5. For Pride weekend, term starts and early flights, pre-booking is the only reliable option.

What comes with every transfer

  • Fixed fare, no meter and no surge pricing
  • Flight tracking, with pickup times that adjust to delays
  • Free 45 minutes of waiting time after landing
  • £7 Heathrow drop-off charge included
  • Free child and booster seats for ages 1 to 12
  • Named, licensed, DBS-checked drivers, and a choice of saloon, executive, 6-seater or 8-seater
  • No Congestion Charge or ULEZ on the M23 and M25 route

Cancellation

Cancel free of charge up to 3 hours before pickup, with a full refund. Most Brighton bookings come in 5 to 10 days ahead. For early flights and term starts, book at least 48 hours ahead, and 2 to 3 weeks ahead for Brighton Pride.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a taxi from Brighton to Heathrow?

A fixed-price saloon covers up to 4 passengers and all four terminals, with the £7 drop-off charge included. There is no Congestion Charge, ULEZ or surge pricing on the M23 and M25 route. Local Brighton black cabs on the meter often charge far more for the same trip.

Should I just use Gatwick instead, since it is closer?

For short-haul flights to Europe, usually yes. Gatwick is only about 28 miles and 35 to 45 minutes up the A23. Brighton travellers choose Heathrow for long-haul services Gatwick does not run, such as Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific from Terminals 3 and 4, BA long-haul from Terminal 5, or a connecting flight that only departs Heathrow.

How long does the Brighton to Heathrow journey take?

About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours off-peak, across 65 miles on the A23, M23 and M25. Allow up to 2 hours 30 minutes in weekday rush hour, mainly on the M25 between Junctions 7 and 14. A late-evening run can drop closer to 1 hour 20.

Is a taxi cheaper than the train from Brighton?

For a solo traveller with light luggage, no. The Thameslink and Elizabeth line route via Farringdon and the National Express coach are cheaper per ticket. For two or more, families, heavy luggage or early pickups, the fixed taxi works out cheaper per head and runs door to door.

Can you collect for Brighton Pride or Brighton Festival?

Yes. Pride in early August and the Festival in May are among our busiest Heathrow to Brighton dates. We meet international visitors at any terminal and drop at your Brighton hotel or any BN postcode on the fixed fare. For Pride weekend, book 2 to 3 weeks ahead.

What happens if my flight to Heathrow is delayed?

We track your flight from take-off to landing. If you land late, your pickup time shifts on its own, with no extra charge. Your 45 minutes of free waiting time starts the moment you touch down.
